Ukhrul, September 20 2017:
After more than a month, the mortal remains of late Rita Haorei was finally laid to rest at Leingangching village today .
The face off between Leingangching Village Authority and the family of late Rita Haorei and JAC for Rightful Burial of late Rita Haorei under the Tangkhul Catholic Council (TCC) had dragged for more than a month with the Leingangching Village Authority refusing to let the family of the late woman bury her body in the village .
Rita Haorei expired on August 7 at Litan Sareikhong, but the Leingangching Village Authority did not allow the family members of the late woman to bury her body in the village, on the ground that the family was banished from the village for allegedly violating customary laws and since she was a Catholic .
Tangkhul Catholics strongly protested the decision of Leingangching village and termed it religious intolerance, strongly denouncing the one village, one denomination dictum.
The Tangkhul Catholic Council (TCC) formed a JAC to demand rightful burial of Rita Haorei at Leingangching village .
According to Sharkaphung village headman W Kasar, the village authority decided to allow the burial of Rita Haorei on humanitarian ground and allotted a site at Manoro cemetery, Leingangching .
The headman further mentioned that the High Court also issued an order to the village authority to allow the burial of the body on humanitarian ground .
He further mentioned that on September 6, a joint meeting was held with Tangkhul social organization leaders including TNL, TKS, TMNL, TNWL, and zonal chairmen and the Leingangching Village Authority accepted the proposal to let the body be buried at the village and allotted a site at Manoro cemetery which is a place for non-local people.
