Imphal, August 02:
Non-teaching staff of Manipur University, under the aegis of the Manipur University Staff Association, MUSA, went on a lightning pen dawn strike from today, paralyzing the functioning of the university administrative block, in protest against non-payment of salaries.
The MU staff launched the strike after the university VC, Prof N Tombi, who had yesterday promised that a decision on the MUSA's demand for payment of May and June salaries would be taken today, merely sent a message to the MUSA president to the effect that every possible step to arrange payment of salaries to the MU employees as early as possible was in progress.
All the non-teaching staff have decided to refrain from work until their demand for payment of salaries is fulfilled.
It may be mentioned that the MUSA had earlier gone on pen down strike in connection with a separate set of demands, but decided to suspend that strike till August 31 in view of the present administrative instability in the state.
The university authorities had convened an emergent meeting of the MU Syndicate on August 4 next to consider the issue.
However, the MUSA has condemned this decision and declared that they would not allow the Syndicate to meet inside the university campus.
The MUSA is further demanding filling up of posts that have been lying vacant since as far back as 1990.
