Imphal, September 16 2011:
The Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) has called off its proposed economic blockade in consideration of the hardships being faced by the people of Manipur currently.
Earlier, JDDC decided to impose indefinite economic blockade along the Imphal-Jiribam road with effect from 7 pm today in pursuance of its demand for upgradation of Jiribam sub-division to a full-fledged revenue district.
Talking to The Sangai Express, convenor of JDDC, M Maipaksana explained that the decision to call off the economic blockade has been arrived at not at the request of Government of Manipur or Information Centre for Hill Areas of Manipur (ICHAM) but in consideration of the hardships being faced by every section of the society in Manipur today.
An emergency meeting of JDDC held today discussed the matter seriously before arriving at the decision of calling off the proposed economic blockade, Maipaksana added.
Pointing out that Kh Rajkumar Singh has already undertaken a fast unto death stir while people of Jiribam sub-division have started a mass hunger relay strike in support of the demand for upgradation of Jiribam to a revenue district, Maipaksana warned that if the Government continue to remain indifferent to the demand even after the fast unto death stir and mass hunger relay strike, JDDC would be constrained to take recourse to even more intense agitation.
At that time, the Government should be responsible for any eventuality, Maipaksana stated categorically, while appealing to the people for support and co-operation
to JDDC .
