Works and Transport Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar has called for creating extensive aware-ness among people settled around Loktak lake so that they are more caring towards wildlife and take pro-active roles in protecting wildlife.
A motivation camp was held today at Khuman Eco-Park, Mayang Imphal ahead of the scheduled counting of wild birds found in and around Loktak lake.
The bird count would be carried out on January 13 by Forest Department's Wildlife Wing in collaboration with NGOs.
Speaking at the camp, Dr Ratankumar said that people would become more caring towards wildlife when they are fully aware of wild animals and their importance in safeguarding the biodiversity.
Environmentalist Dr Kh Shamungou elaborated on the significance of the scheduled bird count and also on the inter-dependent relationship shared between human beings and wild animals.
Kumbi College Principal K Jugeshore explained about the migratory birds which flock at Loktak lake every winter season.
Coordinator of the scheduled bird count RK Birjit said that respective Governments of all Northeastern States with the exception of Naga-land and Manipur have taken up necessary measures to conduct bird count regularly as a Government policy.
The bird count scheduled on January 13 would be conducted from 50 vantage points located in and around Loktak lake.
