Inquiry Commission Two cops grilled on last day of Imphal leg

On the last and final day of the Imphal leg of the Inquiry Commission instituted at the instance of the Supreme Court to probe six cases of alleged extra-judicial killings, two police officials were grilled by the Counsels of the petitioners.
Appearing before the Commission in connection with the killing of Nobo and Govind, SI H Sukumar said that based on inputs, a police team rushed to Langol area on April 4, 2009 and conducted frisking and checking, even as they continued to move in their vehicle.
While moving slowly, at about 20 kms per hour in their Gypsy, the police team saw a party coming from the opposite direction, said Sukumar and added that they were signalled to stop.
Instead of stopping, they opened fire, claimed the police official and added that the police commandos jumped down from the moving vehicle and retaliated killing Nobo and Govind on the spot.
When asked by the Counsel, how far apart they were from each other, the SI said they were separated by about 20 feet/30 feet.
Two hand grenades with pins were found from the spot, said Sukumar.
On further queries, Sukumar said that the police team fired around 15 rounds from 9 mm pistols and about 29 rounds from AK 47 rifles.
When the Counsel asked whether the spent cartridges were recovered after the incident, Sukumar replied in the negative.
Sukumar later changed his reply and submitted that the spent cartridges were recovered.
The then IO of the case and now SP of Senapati police, Pushpanjali, who also appeared before the Commission said that she too did not recover any spent cartridges from the site of the incident.
The Commission will now shift to Delhi and the next hearing is scheduled on March 12 wherein Assam Rifles personnel will give their statement.
On March 15, Manipur police will appear before the Commission.
Another police official then attached with Kakching police, Holar Haokip also appeared before the Commission in connection with the killing of Kiranjit on April 24, 2009 at Laikot in Lamlai.
