Imphal, July 29:
The state level committee for the improvement of NH-53 met this evening at the residence of RK Manisana at Keishampat Aheibam Leikai to hold discussions on the development of national highway-53 as the second lifeline of the state.
During the lengthy meeting, attended by vehicle owners, travel agency representatives and vehicle drivers, the speakers pointed out the frequent harassment of vehicle owners, drivers and motor workers along NH-39 in the neighboring state of Nagaland, and discussed the need to tackle the narrow minded attitudes of some sections.
The speakers also noted that the ceasefire extension issue has heightened the atmosphere, giving anti-social elements a free hand to take advantage of it.
They also lamented that frequent looting and robbery and harassment were taking place without a voice being raised against them, and stressed that this needs to be addressed properly by the people as well as the government.
The meeting at the end resolved to improve the condition of all national highways in the state with priority to NH-53.Secondly, the committee agreed to form an adhoc committee of 25 members in addition to the existing convening committee.
