Even as Assam Rifles denied harassing civilians at Sekmaijin after its troops were attacked by unidentified gunmen on October 21 night, AMSU said that several villagers who tried to enter their houses were taken to AR camps and released after .assaulting them severely today also.
AMSU said that a 58 year old man identified as Moirangthem Nawang residing next to the AR camp was taken to the camp and assaulted.
He was released after he was forced to do manual labour and has been taking shelter at a relief camp at Mayang Imphal.
The student body said the people are subjected to extreme hardship by AR.
It appealed to the authority concerned to check it at the earliest.
Meanwhile AR in a statement refuted the charge that it prevented villagers from entering their houses and alleged that some people of the area including women tried to obstruct the security forces from carrying out search operations after the incident.
It said that during the search operation in the area, to members of the PLA identified as Ch Hemchandra Meitei (29) and G Jayanta Sharma (38) were apprehended.
The apprehendees revealed that .the villagers around the incident site were aware of the plans of the UGs.
In the meantime, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (I) has condemned the alleged atrocities committed by Assam Rifles personnel to civilians after unidentified gunmen attacked the 5th AR personnel, at Sekmaijin Hangul on October 21 night.
