Imphal, October 26:
The Manipur government nominees for undergoing 1st year MBBS courses at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, RIMS, have been allowed admission into the institute after paying the necessary fees for the academic session 2001-2002.According to the director, RIMS, Dr.N Bijoy, this is in accordance with the instructions of the Gauhati High Court, and will be subject to the outcome of the writ appeal no 421 of 2001 pending for disposal in the Gauhati High Court at its principal seat.
The pro rata contribution owed by the state government has still not been paid.
It may be mentioned that 36 candidates from Manipur who were selected after passing the competitive examination organized by the state government for pursuing the MBBS course in RIMS this year were not allowed admission because the state government had defaulted on payment of its pro rata contribution to the institute, though they were allowed to attend classes.
The present amount of pro rata contribution to RIMS due from the state government is approximately Rs 6 crores.
Dr N Bijoy, speaking to IPF, said the other states of the NE had paid their contributions before the session began.
He added that the session was started as scheduled as the institute is run under, the North Eastern Council, NEC, and the institute has no right to postpone or delay the schedule which has been fixed by the concerned authorities.
He observed that the fruits and benefits of the institute, including patients' care, and employment facility, is dominantly enjoyed by the state, and lamented that the state authorities are ignoring their responsibilities to the institute, which could bring welfare to the people.
