Imphal, October 26:
A meeting of the newly formed Manipur People's Convention, this morning, chaired by the former chief minister, Wahengbam Nipamacha, called for the immediate revocation of the government of India's new anti-terrorism ordinance, the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance.
The meeting also formally inaugurated the party's newly written constitution and unanimously chose Nipamacha as the MPC president.
The MPC meeting expressed its exasperation at the government of India's new ordinance and the declaration of some selective underground organizations as terrorist organization.
It also said the party was confounded by the government of India counter insurgency policy which seeks to initiate dialogues with some while declaring others as terrorists.
Such a policy will never be able to solve the problem of insurgency in the northeast region, the meeting observed.
On the other hand, this will only worsen the law and order situation, it further noted.
The MPC supports the dialogue initiative of the government of India with the NSCN (IM), however since the government has not been transparent on the matter, the MPC cannot but express suspicion, the meeting observed.
It called upon the government of India to come open with the progress of the talks honestly from lime to time so as not to arouse suspicion in the minds of the general public, MPC said.
The MPC also resolved to oppose any decision or outcome of the talks if it is liable of breaching peace in Manipur.
Noting that the ongoing strike by the government employees has very grave consequences, the MPC called upon the government to resolve the issue at the earliest.
Today's meeting also decided to make L Lalit Singh its working president, G Joykumar Sharma and Haokholet Khongsai its vice presidents, Deven Thingujamba, Moulana Abdul Salam, B Santi Sharma its general secretaries, and L Ibomcha (retc MSC) its treasurer.
Other members of the party's executive committee will be nominated soon, the meeting resolved.
