Villagers of S Leingangching Litan village of Ukhrul district today said that they are compelled to cultivate poppy plants as they were neglected by the government for long time.
Speaking to volunteers of All Manipur Anti-Drug Association (AMADA) who visited the village to distribute crop seeds for growing in place of harmful poppy plant in gratitude to their helping hand to AMADA�s poppy plant elimination drives, a member of the village authority Shangkhahao said that they were compelled to cultivate the poppy plant as government neglected them in all fields.
Even though, they grow the plant with a view to get more profit, now they came to know the harm of the plant in the society.
That was why they decided to support in the drive by destroying the standing plants, he further said.
As a Christian, it is not a hard task to take a decision to step back from doing something when we know the evil, he said appealing the people to extend full cooperation in the drive to eliminate the evil plant growing in their fields and pave the way in making a good society.
Chairman of the village, Sakapning also appealed the villagers to extend corporation in making a perfect society and try to bring forward the society.
President of AMADA headquarters, Moirangthem Padmini Leima and Takhellambam Ibechoubi, mother of Momocha who died in the hand of a drug addict in 1987 also attended the crop seed distribution.
On the occasion, two each bags of mustard oil seed and potato seed and one bag of pea donated by Ibechoubi in her son�s name was distributed.
