The near total solar eclipse of this century was seen in Manipur with 93.5 per cent of the surface of the sun covered by the shadow of the moon today at 5.37 am.
Solar eclipse was observed in Manipur University, with the facilities provided by the Department of Physics and Department of Library Science under the leadership of Prof H Nandakumar Sharma, of Manipur University.
Several scholars, students and teachers participated in the observation of the longest total solar eclipse.

H Nandakumar Sharma said that the solar eclipse was partial with 93.5 per cent of the surface of the sun covered by the shadow of the moon from 5.37 am to 7.38 am in Manipur and the maximum area of the surface of the sun was reported to be eclipsed at 6.28 am "We saw 93.5 percent of the eclipse from 5.37 am to 7.38 am but the maximum sight was available when the sky was a bit clear from 6.28 to 6.34 am.
It was a great experience for us to witness the rare eclipse," Kh Ibochouba , a research scholar in Physics Department, said. "Initially we were anxious if we could view the longest solar eclipse of the 21st century owing to the monsoon, but fortunately the solar eclipse could be viewed in Manipur as well," expressed the Professor. The longest duration of the solar eclipse was said to be six minutes and 38 seconds and experts had said that total solar eclipse would be visible in Darjeeling, Bhopal, Indore, Varanasi, Taregna located 25 kilometers away from Patna with the duration of three minutes and 48 seconds.
