State government has adopted a policy for the development of Manipuri language and literature including its own scripts and for the development of tribal dialects, said the state education minister, L Jayentakumar Singh in the House of the Manipur Assembly Wednesday.
Giving reply to a question raised by the opposition member, RK Anand of MPP, the minister said government has adopted the policy to promote, develop and protect Manipuri language and its scripts along with the development of the major tribal dialects of the scheduled tribes of the state.
Government is targeting to introduce teaching of indigenous Meetei Mayek in Manipuri language and all other subjects in Manipuri medium from Class-VI to VIII from the academic session 2010, the education minister said adding that Meetei Mayek has already introduced in the study of Manipuri language from Class I to V starting from the academic session 2006 .
He further said that the government has instituted a special award of Rs 1 lakh under the named "State Award for Literature which would be given every year to outstanding writer in Manipuri language as per the language development policy.
