Imphal, October 14 2009:
Thanks to a noble gesture, a heart patient who has been lying in coma at the ICU ward in RIMS Hospital, is on the path to recovery after a pace maker donated by an individual has been implanted on the ailing woman.
The patient identified as 59-year-old Loushangbam Priyosakhi from Sugnu Wapokpi is the recipient of the pace maker donated by an Assistant professor of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) namely Dr N Sumarjit in memory of his mother (L) Ningthoujam Ongbi Tarunkumari.
It is informed that Priyosakhi had been under the supervision of Dr W Kulachadra since admission at the ICU ward on October 7 .
Inspite of her survival depending on implantation of a pace maker, the patient, owing to financial constraints was fighting against all odds to live longer, when to the pleasant surprise of the patient party they were informed of the pace maker donation.
Moments after the living saving gadget was received on october 12 the implantation operation was conducted with the patient said to be showing signs of recovery.
Medical Superintendent of RIMS Hospital Dr Y Mohen said apart from the value of the pace-maker about Rs 99,500 the equipment is of good quality.
Appreciating humane gesture of the donor, Dr Mohen expressed hope that Dr Sumarjit's attitude to help deprived section of the society would be a trendsetter for more such praiseworthy contributions in the future.
Reacting to news reports about Manipur Chemists and Druggists' Association deciding to cease supply of medicines to three pharmacies operating inside the RIMS Hospital campus, the medical Superintendent described the Association's decision as mean, unethical and an affront to patients belonging to economically weaker section of the society.
Explaining that opening of pharmacies inside the campus was approved under the objectives of ensuring quality medicines at subsidised rates, Dr Mohen did not rule out possibility of legal action against the Association.
