MPP names 5 candidates

Manipur People's Party (MPP), one of the oldest regional political parties in the entire North East region, has named five candidates who would be contesting the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly election.
Apart from formally announcing the first list of candidates, the party's election manifesto was also released at the party's Kangjeibung Maning office today.
The MPP candidates announced today are party president N Sovakiran (Heirok AC), Y Priyokumar (Heingang AC), Khaba Paonam (Keishamthong AC), AH Khan (Kshetrigao) and Thokchom Sarchil (Singjamei AC) .
After announcing the first list of candidates, Sovakiran said that the party's second list of candidates would be announced soon.
In order to retain the regional character of MPP, the party would not forge alliance with any other party.
The MPP election manifesto listed a number of points under three categories classified as political, economic and social.
Under the political category, MPP pledged to protect the unity of Manipur and its territorial integrity at all costs.
It vowed to resolve the issue of insurgency through political dialogue.
The party further vowed to make its best efforts in order to get AFSPA 1958 repealed.
Creation of more districts for administrative convenience is another point of the election manifesto.
Introduction of Manipur Legislative Council, amendment of MLR&LR Act, 1960 in the form of a uniform land law, establishment of Manipur Regiment and enforcement of ILPS or similar mechanism are some other points listed in the manifesto.
Under the category of economic development, MPP vowed to give compensation to land owners affected by Loktak Project.
It also pledged to take over Loktak Project so as to make it an asset of the State in addition to developing Moreh as a special economic zone in tandem with the Government of India's Act East Policy.
Preservation and protection of traditions and customs of indigenous people, promotion of historical or indigenous games and inclusion of Meitei Mayek in the country's currency notes are some points listed under social category.
