Imphal, July 31:
Four jawans of the Border Security Force, BSF, were injured when bombs believed to have been planted by militants exploded at B-Kaljang area in Churachandpur district early this morning.
The incident took place when jawans of 33rd BSF were on patrol in the B-Kaljang area, on the Churachandpur to Sugunu road, about 13 kms north of CCpur police station.
Official sources said that at around 6.15 am, as the BSF jawans were nearing the B-Kaljang village, two powerful improvised explosive devices blew up, seriously damaging a bullet proof vehicle and injuring four personnel riding inside.
The sources said the unidentified attackers followed up the bomb attack with heavy gunfire upon the BSF convoy.
The BSF personnel returned fire, and a heavy encounter ensued that lasted for about half an hour.
The militants, numbering about ten, however made good their escape.
Sources said the attackers are believed to belong to the proscribed UNLF.
Reports also said that the BSF personnel subsequently conducted search operations in the area and detained and assaulted several youths.
The four injured BSF personnel have been identified as constables Premkumar Singh, Romendra, Bijendra and Dhanabir.
They have been evacuated by Army helicopter to Leimakhong Army Hospital.
