Jagat hands out Akademi awards

Governor Gurbachan Jagat distributed the State Kala Akademi awards for the year 2009 in a grand ceremony held at the auditorium of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy today.
Padmashree RK Jhalajit Singh presided over the function.
Speaking at the occasion as chief guest, the Governor noted that promotion and preservation of art and culture has been the remarkable feature of the post-Statehood period in Manipur.
Gurbachan Jagat, who is the Chairman of Manipur State Kala Akademi said, "We must try to cultivate great art.
Art and culture do not develop in an atmosphere of neglect, deprivation and contempt.
It will never suffer from over-appreciation" .
He observed that working in an atmosphere of peace and traquility will only push the people of the State forward.
Highlighting the natural beauty of the State, Gurbachan Jagat said that tourism would bring prosperity in the State.
The Governor also expressed hope that Manipur State Kala Akademi would continue to flourish and its endeavours would go a long way in the preservation and propagation of Manipur's cultural tradition.
Earlier, Gurbachan Jagat presented the prestigious award to 17 noted artistes � RK Danisana (Dance), Elangbam Sonamani Singh (Literature), Kongbrailatpam Binakumari Devi (Dance), Khwairakpam Yaimabi Devi (Dance), Bachaspatimayum Krishnachandra Sharma (Music), Pukhrambam Tampakleima Devi (Music), Wairokpam Bhagirath Singh (Theatre), Leitam Tomal Meetei (Shumang Leela), Laishram Ibocha Khuman (Thang Ta), Takhellambam Ibungo Singh (Waree Leeba), Tongbram Bira Singh (Pena), YL Vangam (Tribal culture), KR Thalou Maram (Tribal culture), (Late) Chongtham Manihar Singh (Literature), Ksh Sarat Singh (Fine arts), Leitanthem Jiten (Fine Arts), Laiphrakpam Ningol Oinam Ongbi Dhoni Devi (Maibi) .
