Congress wins majority in IMC polls

Imphal, May 30 2011:
The Congress overshadowed other political parties to obtain the majority in the Imphal Municipal Council.
The party won 14 seats including one uncontested out of a total of 27 wards.
The final results are NCP won two seats while CPI, BJP, AITC (Trinamool Congress) won one each and the remaining eight wards went to independent candidates.
Counting, which began yesterday, concluded today afternoon.
Results of 16 wards were declared yesterday.
Except for some disturbances at the counting place in Imphal West DC office complex, no major untoward incidents occurred.
98 candidates were in the fray in the elections to elect 27 councillors.
Congress fielded candidates in all the 27 wards, BJP in 10 wards, CPI in four wards, Trinamool Congress in six wards, NCP in 10 wards and JD (U) in one ward.
A total of 36 independent candidates were also in the fray.
The Congress, which registered victory in the poll, fielded many new faces.

Most of the seating Congress councillors suffered humiliating defeats.
Among others, incumbent chairwoman Ranisana Devi lost the election to independent candidate Ph Praneshwori Devi by a margin of 293 votes.
The BJP, NCP and MPP put up a miserable performance.
BJP and NCP fielded 10 candidates each; BJP won in one and the NCP in two.
The Trinamool won one ward and can be considered to be improving its popularity, particularly after it opened its account in Manipur after winning the Konthoujam bye-election.
After the results of five out of seven wards in Imphal East district were declared yesterday, counting in the remaining two wards, 23 and 26 resumed today at 8 am and results were declared in the afternoon.
Birjit Lousangbam of NCP won the election by defeating his nearest rival L Memcha Devi by 49 votes.
Birjit secured 1612 votes.
Ward no.26 went in favour of independent candidate M Majakhon.
He got 3878 and defeated his nearest rival M Majaguilu by 671 votes.
Counting in the remaining eight wards of Imphal West district concluded in the late afternoon.
Independent candidate, Phurailatpam Praneshori Devi defeated seating councillor and chairperson, Ranisana in ward no..6In this ward, Tourangbam Indrajit and Y Leibakmacha were elected as Ward Development Members.
In ward no.7, independent candidate K Priyosakhi won by defeating her nearest rival E Ranita by 313 votes.
Priyosahki got 2329 votes.
K Ranjit and A Manisana were elected as Ward Development Members.
K Tikendra Singh of Congress won in ward no.8 by defeating P Sarat of BJP by 175 votes.
S Nanao and K Shatish were elected as Ward Development Members.
S Sunilkumar of Congress defeated K Chourjit of NCP by 1060 votes in ward no..9Sunilkumar got 2163 votes.
K Rajen and Th Chandrashakhi were elected as Ward Development Members.
S Tiken of Congress was declared elected from ward no.10.He defeated independent candidate RK Memcha by 432 votes.
S Seityabarta and W Devaraj were elected as Ward Development Members.
In ward no.13, N Raghumani of Congress defeated independent candidate O Ashok Meitei by 654 votes.
In this ward Th Jefri Meitei and H Shantikumar were elected as Ward Development Members.
Independent RK Bimolini Devi defeated Trinamool Congress candidate by 165 votes in ward no.17 .
Bimolini secured 1438 votes.
Th Joychandra and A Panthoi were elected as Ward Development Members.
Kalanchonglu Gangmei of Congress defeated independent candidate Mikki by 985 votes in ward no.24 .
Raja Dangmei and Rajen Gangmei were elected as Ward Development Members.
In ward no.27, S Memsana of CPI defeated Ch Memcha of Congress by 44 votes.
Memsana secured 1490 votes.
A Manglem and A Komol were elected as Ward Development Members.
