Imphal, February 18 2012:
Apart from the polling stations against which complaints were lodged, proxy voting in the form of voting by a single person in different polling booths have been detected in polling stations against which no complaints were received.
This was discovered by election officers while checking photographs of voters taken on polling day by using a special computer software.
As large number of proxy votes were detected in many polling stations against which no complaints were received, it is likely that these polling stations may go to re-poll together with the 436 polling stations against which complaints were lodged.
Nevertheless, there are many polling stations where photographs of voters taken on polling day perfectly matched with their EPIC photographs.
After receiving a complete report from the State election department followed by a consultative meeting between political parties and ECI-appointed special observers at Imphal, the ECI may announce on February 23 a date for re-poll in the State.
