Naga People's Movement for Human Rights-South Sector (NPMHR-South) on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) dwelt issues on the human rights at the Indoor Stadium, Head Quarters Chandel, Chandel district on Wednesday and pledged to uphold the goals of the declaration and speak up for the rights and freedom of others in the community.
The occasion was joined by various rights activists from communities like the Boros, Dimasas, the Karbis of Assam and also from New Delhi.
Organised jointly by the Naga People's Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) and Chandel Naga Peoples Organisation (CNPO), the occasion was attended by representatives of all the people from the hill districts of the state including Churachandpur.
The occasion was also graced by the presence of human rights activists from the communities of Karbi, Boro, Demasa in Assam and Bela Bhatia, faculty member of Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), Delhi and a freelance human rights activist.
Addressing the congregation, Phamhring Sengul, convenor of NPMHR-South while reminding that on the occasion of human rights day in 2007 the United Nations Secretary General had launched a year long campaign with the theme of 'Dignity and Justice for all of us', called upon the people to reinforce the vision of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
He also exhorted the people for the need to work collectively and whole heartedly for the common goal of peace, justice and human rights.
The convenor also pointed out that forceful construction of dams, "mining in our backyards" with the sole intention of "robbing our natural resources" combing with militarization of "our land" were a form of human rights violation.
In this regards Phamhring called upon the people to demand in one voice for the respect of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights while adding that the NPMHR would reaffirm its commitment to uphold the goals.
