Panchayat election Huge expenditures noticeable : Election Commission Secretary

With the fourth Panchayat election approaching fast, many candidates are visibly incurring huge expenditures for the poll, said State Election Commission Secretary Th Chitra.
Talking to The Sangai Express, Chitra said that expenditures being made by the candidates are quite huge compared to the previous Panchayat election held in 2007 .
Taking serious of the 'intense competitions' among rival candidates to win the election, the Election Commission has taken up necessary measures to make the election peaceful, free and fair.
The Commission has so far not received any complaint about violation of model code of conduct.
Nevertheless, the Commission has been organising awareness programmes so as to enable voters to understand the whole election process and vote according to their own free will.
On being asked about the Commission's all the polling stations of the district have been categorised as hyper-sensitive.
Altogether 231 candidates for Zilla Parishad Members, 595 candidates for Pradhans and 3798 candidates for Ward Members are contesting in the Panchayat election scheduled on September 13.reading on the high-pitch battles being fought by rival candidates of the Panchayat election which is something unprecedented, the Secretary said that the Commission has been closely observing the election scenes.
She confided that the Commission need to be strengthened so that it can conduct future elections without any lapses or drawbacks.
All the DCs and SPs of the four valley districts where the Panchayat election would be held have been directed to ensure that no untoward incident takes place in connection with the poll.
The Jiribam ADC has already issued an order prohibiting all kinds of social gathering and joint feasting after 7 pm within Jiribam subdivision, the Secretary said.
