Imphal, June 29 2021:
The Chanura Langchinglel Kangleipak (CLK) has urged the authorities concerned to send more Covid samples from Manipur for genome sequencing so as to ascertain variants affecting the State people.
CLK in a press statement, expressed concern over the grim situation in the State due to Covid and especially over the news of detection of Delta variant which is touted as the variant mainly responsible for the second wave in India.
Moreover the emergence of Delta plus, a more virulent and contagious variant, is of a big concern and States like Maharashtra which have been hit by the variant have step up measures to deal with the new variant, said CLK while urging the State Government to identify the variants largely affecting the State people.
Easing on restrictions without carefully examining the variants could lead to a huge catastrophe, CLK cautioned.
The pandemic has put many States considered to be well equipped with health infrastructure and manpower on their knees and as such claims that Manipur-with the current infrastructure, is prepared to deal with the third wave is something hard to digest, it said.
With the subsequent waves of Covid pandemic in the State, RIMS and JNIMS which are the biggest hospitals have greatly restricted treatment for ailments and diseases thereby further adding woes to the poorer section which constitute the majority of the population, it said.
And as seeking treatment in private hospitals is burdensome, the Government should build Covid dedicated hospitals and further augment capacities of RIMS, JNIMS and other district hospitals and engage necessary manpower before the third wave which is expected to come within a few months time hit the State, CLK appealed.
CLK also acknowledged that the fight against the pandemic is not Government's sole responsibility and reminded all to play their part by strictly following Covid appropriate behaviour.
