Naga leaders work for safe passage on Imphal-Jiri Road

Imphal, May 26 2020: In order to allay apprehension and also to help and give safe passage to transporters and stranded people who are returning from outside the State of Manipur, Naga leaders have started a tour along the Imphal-Jiribam road on Monday, May 25 .

"We have done massive mobilization along the Imphal-Jiribam road so that transporters and stranded people can have safe passages," a Naga leader who is among the team informed Newmai News Network over phone this evening.

The Naga leaders headed by Gaidon Kamei, former president of the United Naga Council (UNC), held a series of meeting with the people living along the Imphal-Jiribam road today.

The programme of the Naga leaders was prompted by complaints from drivers transporting the stranded people that people are not co-operating with them.

"To allay the apprehension of the drivers and returnees we are mobilizing people living along the Imphal-Jiribam road to extend maximum support to the transporters.

We heard the occurrence of some stray incidents on this highway which had happened due to misunderstanding.

It is very unfortunate.

We are campaigning along the Imphal-Jiribam road now so that such incidents do not occur again," said Gaidon Kamei.

According to the former UNC president, meetings were organized at various places along the Imphal-Jiribam road today so that motor workshops and pharmacies or any other needed facilities are available to people in need during this trying time.

It can be noted here that special trains have been transporting stranded people of Manipur from various parts of the country till Jiribam railway station.

From there, buses arranged by the Manipur Government are transporting the stranded people to various districts of Manipur.

This morning, the first meeting was held between the team of Naga leaders and Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation (RNYO) of Noney Range and Longmai public leaders at Noney, according to the Naga leaders.

"The RNYO and leaders in Noney assured the team of Naga leaders of full support to the transporters and stranded people," said a leader who participated in the meeting.

Later in the afternoon, the Naga leaders travelled to Nungba and held a similar meeting with Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation (RNYO) of Nungba Range and Nungba Headquarters Authority.

"The people there too assured us that they will extend maximum support to the drivers and the returnees," another Naga leader said.

Late in the evening, the team of Naga leaders travelled to Kambiron near Jiribam to meet the leaders of the area.

Till the time of filing this story the meeting was underway.

The Naga leaders then appealed everyone to discard politics, caste and creed but to put humanity first during this time of hardship.

They termed that the COVID-19 pandemic is a war against humanity.

"We are hopeful that the transporters and the stranded people will have safe passage from now onwards," they expressed.
