Govt to fulfil ATSUM demands

Manipur Government on Wednesday agreed to fulfil most of the key demands raised by ATSUM and the Chief Secretary is likely to issue orders within October 27 to officially implement the considered demands.
The agreement was reached after a marathon meeting held between representatives of All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur (ATSUM) and the Manipur Government at the Chief Minister's Bungalow here.
The meeting chaired by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh was also attended by his Cabinet colleagues�Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, Health minister Phungzathang Tonsing, Industries minister Govindas Konthoujam, Education minister M Okendro, PHED minister I Hemochandra�and Chief Secretary PC Lawmkunga and other top officials.
ATSUM side was represented by its president Muan Tombing, general secretary Vareiyo Shatsang and presidents and secretaries of the federating units of the student body.
"Manipur Government has finally agreed to fulfill most of our demands.
The Chief Secretary will be issuing orders on October 27 to officially implement the considered demands," ATSUM president Muan Tombing said at a press meet at the union office here.
The demands of the union which have been considered to implement by the Manipur Government include regularization of contract lecturers of Higher Secondary Schools, setting up of B ED centres in the hills, power bifurcation for separating the office of the Additional Directorate of Education (S) Hills, making all the PHSCs, PHCs, Community Health Centres and District Health Centres functional, ascertaining the total number of backlog posts in every Government Department and filling of vacancies through special recruitment drive for Scheduled Tribes within one month and making the ST Commission functional by appointing the Committee members with immediate effect, which the Chief Minister promised during Wednesday's meeting to make a New Year's gift.
