Ahead of IMC polls, new members join INC

Sitting BJP Councillor of Ward No 19, Imphal Municipal Corporation Y Ratikanta of Yaiskul Assembly Constituency along with a large number of his supporters and Yumlembam (O) L Lukamani Devi of the same Ward and Assembly Constituency have joined the Indian National Congress in a formal function held today at Congress Bhawan, Imphal.
Ratikanta was first elected as a BJP candidate in the 2011 municipal election.
President of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), TN Haokip giving formal approval, stated that such brave and bold steps of Ratikanta will surely strengthen the MPCC.
He added that if one is to play in the big political playground, people with same ideology and commitment should come together under one roof.
Further, other elected leaders are eager to join the INC and be a part of one of the largest political parties in the country, he added.
Meanwhile, vice-president MPCC MLA N Biren highlighted that the trust entrusted by the people of Manipur has been well served by the State Govt in the last 14 years.
The rapid changes brought in infrastructure and transportation is worth mentioning.
The State Govt is committed to lead the State forward, he assured.
Any fanatic political party which has specific interest for some particular community or group cannot lead a vast country like India for long, he said.
He added that the INC is a liberal and secular political party.
Further he urged the people to extend their support to INC.
On the other hand MLA of Yaiskul A/C E Chand warmly welcomed Ratikanta to INC.
He added that with the new councillor the A/C will further develop.
It may be mentioned that out of 27 councillors of Imphal Municipal Corporation, 17 are from the INC.
Ratikanta commented that he joined the party to work for the people.
When asked of the series of allegations placed by the BJP Manipur unit, TN Haokip stated the Congress is committed to the working for the benefits and upliftment of the people and there will always be some section opposed to such steps.
It is natural to place such allegations and blame, he added.
Further he said that MPCC is preparing well to face the upcoming IMC election.
Other key leaders of MPCC also attended the programme.
