Imphal, November 23:
The proposed rally against the continued imposition of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 planned by MPP on November 25 has been cancelled.
Instead the regional party will stage a dharna on the same issue at its office complex.
Speaking to reporters today MPP president Dr L Chandramani disclosed that the proposed rally has been cancelled due to imposition of restrictions under section 144 of the CrPC in Imphal West and Imphal East districts as security measures in connection with the forthcoming visit of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to the State.
Recalling that MPP was elected to power in 1972, 1974 and 1990, the party would not challenge the restriction, Dr L Chandramani said while conveying reservation on the sudden imposition of CrPC 144 just after MPP announced its plan to hold the rally against the draconian Act.
Even as the proposed rally has been cancelled, MPP workers including representatives from hill districts would stage a dharna demanding repeal of AFSPA from the whole State from 11 am of November 24.Memoranda urging to table the recommendations of the Justice Jeevan Reddy Review Committee in the Parliament session would be sent to the President and Prime Minister through the State Governor on the same day, Dr Chandramani informed.
