Imphal, May 18:
Congress Pradesh Election Authority's chairman Slyvias Condapan who arrived this afternoon has begun hectic discussions with several party leaders to appoint a consensus candidate as the PCC president.
Talking to The Sangai Express at Hotel Nirmala this afternoon, Condapan informed that efforts are on to appoint a consensus candidate for the post of PCC president but hastened to add that election would be the only option if the party members fail to bring forward a consensus candidate.
On being questioned who is likely to be appointed to the post, he replied that the consensus candidate's name is likely to be known during the party's meeting which is scheduled tomorrow.
The meeting which is to be presided by Slyvias Condapan will be held at the Congress Bhavan at 10 am tomorrow and will focus on the upcoming election of the PCC president.
The meeting will also be attended by the newly elected PCC members and District Congress Committee's presidents.
Sources said that opinion of all the members will be taken during the meeting for projecting a consensus candidate and if the members fail to put forward a unanimous decision on the matter, a notification is likely to be issued fixing the date for the election of the PCC president.
Even though Information Minister Gaikhangam had already acquired his nomination papers for the election following strong support from most of the party leaders, the move is being reviewed as some of the Kuki NGOs have strongly rejected any move to appoint Gaikhangam to the PCC post.
Some party members have also expressed their opinion that Chief Minister O Ibobi should continue as the PCC president.
Meanwhile, some of the newly elected Dist congress Committee presidents and PCC members today stated that the party members will try their best to project a consensus candidate instead of going for the election.
