Appealing against imposition of unbearable monetary demand by UGs on Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), representatives (councillors) of Municipalities and Nagar Panchayats today staged a Wakat Meepham in front of Keishampat Lairembi here today.
It is said similar demonstrations would also be staged in Bishnupur and Thoubal district in subsequent days.
In case the appeal is not respected even after the demonstrations, the councillors decided to launch pen down strike for five days and mass resignation later.
According to secretary of All Manipur Municipal Council of Nagar Panchayat JAC O Bimola, various UG groups have been demanding percentage cuts from toll tax, other taxes and fund released for developmental activities at a juncture when pressures are being given on the Government for giving more power and to allot more fund to the local bodies.
As a result, developmental activities could not be taken up.
The functioning of the Municipalities have suffered so much that Nambol Municipal Council has already remained shut down due to threat and pressure from UGs, she added.
