Demanding unconditional release of UPF Ithai Zonal Council general secretary L Premjit arrested by Assam Rifles by May 14, UPF has threatened a 24 hour State-wide bandh with effect from midnight of May 14.Speaking to reporters today, UPF vice-president YK Dhiren asserted that Premjit is an innocent functionary of the UPF working for the people.
He further informed that sit-in-protests will be staged in different parts of the State starting from tomorrow.
A decision to this effect was adopted during a joint meeting of NIPCO, HRA, MAFYF, Nupi Samaj, Macha Leima, AMKIL, Tami-Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup, Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Semgat Sagat Marup and Thoubal District United Women Development Organisation.
Laishram Premjit was arrested by a combined team of 7 AR and 100th Bn BSF from his home near Ithai Dam in the wee hours of May 8.He was handed over to the Kumbi police station on the next day.
He was sentenced to jail with the charge of being a UNLF cadre.
Taking strong exception to such acts of false allegations against innocent persons after taking them into custody, several Meira Paibi organisations have strongly condemned the act of the Assam Rifles.
Decrying such repeated blatant violation of human rights, the Meira Paibis flayed the inaction and indifference of the State Government.
They also warned of launching a strong agitation including civil disobedience movement in case the State Government refuses to intervene in this case too.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by AMSU Lamangdong District Committee has strongly condemned the incident of detaining Premjit.
It also demanded his unconditional release while extending support to any agitation for immediate release of the detainee.
