One IRB personnel was apprehended by people while he was attempting to lift two-wheelers parked on the river bank of Nambul to the western side of Paona International Market.
The accused identified as Md Salauddin (35) s/o late Md Iboyai of Lilong Ushoipokpi has been handed over to police.
He is a Rifleman in the F Coy of 4th IRB.
Following the ban on entry of all kinds of vehicles in Imphal market areas in the aftermath of the bomb blast at Babupara on April 24 and discovery of another explosive just outside Pologround on the same day on the Governor's route, shopkeepers of Paona International Market have been parking their vehicles along Nambul river bank.
Clad in civil dress, Salauddin came to the parking at about 2 pm today and started trying different keys on different two wheelers before he was caught by the shopkeepers of the market complex.
When the vehicle lifter was rounded up by the people, he had already opened the locks of a scooter (Honda Pleasure) and a motorcycle (Hero Honda).
Taking strong exception to the theft attempt a law-enforcing security personnel, shopkeepers of the market complex closed their shops from 2.30 pm in protest.
One shopkeeper said that at least 200 two-wheelers belonging to shopkeepers and sales persons are parked in the area every day.
There have been cases of vehicles lifted from the parking area in the past, he recalled.
Following the incident, shopkeepers have urged upon the OC of City Police Y Munal to allow them park their vehicles in front of their shops.
