The State Cabinet which met today evening has decided to deploy the elite police commandos in the hill districts to combat all unlawful organisations.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, a senior Cabinet Minister said that 800 commandos are presently utilised in the four valley districts of the State.
With the Government set on increasing the strength of the police commandos to 1800, it was decided that some of them would be deployed in the hill districts.
There will be no fresh recruitment, however, said the Cabinet Minister and added that the extra 1000 commandos will be drawn from the IRB and MR.Though it was earlier decided that the minimum qualification for appointment to the SPOs should be Class X in line with police constables, it has been decided to relax the norms to Class VIII following public demand.
The recruitment drive for SPOs at Chajing may be held tomorrow.
Meanwhile the Manipur District Councils Ordinance has been re-submitted to the Governor for necessary approval after amending certain clauses during a meeting of the Cabinet presided by Chief Minister O Ibobi today.
The Ordinance was first submitted to the Governor on April 21 for his consent to enforce it under the District Council Act 1971 so that District Council elections can be held in the State.
However, the Governor returned the Ordinance to the State Cabinet to study it again.
The Ordinance has been named Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council (Third Amendment)
