Two-day National workshop begins

A two-day National workshop on "Recent Advances in Genetics and Genomic" was inaugurated today in the Conference Hall of Biotechnology Department organised by Bio Chemistry Department of Manipur University under the sponsorship of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
Prof Adya Prasad Pandey, Vice-Chancellor, MU, Prof W Vishwanath Singh, Dean, School of Life Science, Prof N Rajmuhan Singh, Dean, School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Prof Debananda, Head, Dept of Biochemistry, Prof Upendra Nongthomba, IISC Bangalore attended the function as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
The programme began with felicitation to the dignitaries
and welcome address by Prof Debananda, according to a statement issued by the PRO of MU.
In his speech, Prof Adya Prasad Pandey stated that the subject matter of genetics and genomics is very wide and very comprehensive.
These disciplines have greater relevance and importance in the society because every characteristic of a living organism or human beings are the genetic expressions of the genome.
In the 21 st century, human will face serious health challenges from cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and other lifestyle diseases, non communicable disease and the onslaught of drug -resistant pathogens etc.
Research is a never ending process, serious and in-depth research is continuing to eliminate these human enemies and to meet these challenges, he said.
Prof Rangnath .narrated about the objective and facilities facilitated by science academies.
While briefing the objective of science academies, he also highlighted that the organisation is actively conducting outreach programmes and activities throughout the nation like organising seminars, conferences and workshops in different institutes and universities.
This academy also gives scholarship to science students at graduation level.
Besides, it also regularly publishes science magazine namely "Resonance." The basic aim of conducting all the activities by the academies is nothing but to bring science and society more closer.
Prof Biswanath, Prof Rajmuhon and Nongthomba also spoke during the function.
