Afforestation drive conducted

In conjunction with the celebrations of harvesting season up on the hills, Haochong Coy of Noney Battalion under the aegis of Loktak Brigade organised an afforestation drive in the Haochong village yesterday.
The event was organised in a bid to motivate the locals about the advantages and future prospects of afforestation, conveyed a statement of PIB (Defence Wing) .
At the event, the officials emphasised upon the need of conserving the environment to contribute towards a healthy and sustainable world.
The various advantages of plantation like soil conservation, reduction in global warming, increase in rainfall probability were explained to them.
Small scale yet long term effects like availability of shade, green cover, fruits and flowers from the trees were also told.
A total of 200 saplings were planted around the village church & community hall and also near homes.
The planted flora included fruit and flower bearing trees.
Villagers showed great enthusiasm and spirit in plantation.
A total strength of 36 villagers including men, women and children participated in the drive.
The event was successful in inculcating a sense of pride and belongingness amongst the locals for their saplings and also for the existing green cover, conveyed the statement.
Meanwhile, Maram Bn under the aegis of Spti Brigade of Red Shield Division conducted a tree plantation drive with Nature Club of Don Bosco College, Maram at Maram Garrison yesterday.
About 350 saplings were planted in and around Maram Garrison.
