Imphal, February 16, 2013:
Unhappy over the silent attitude of the State government over its earlier assurance of taking up action against Imphal East SDPO Manjit and his sub-ordinate personnel who opened fire a number of tear gas canisters at a crowd mourning for the death of FCI truck driver Ningombam Gobardhon at Mantripukhri on February 9, Transporters and Drivers Council (TDC) has resolved to stop plying of all commercial vehicles in the State from February 20 to 22. It may be noted here that Gobardhon was found murdered inside his truck under mysterious circumstances at Kohima along National Highway 2 (Imphjal-Dimapur) Road on February 7 with the sugar bags he was carrying and the handyman missing.
Announcing the decision of launching cease work strike during a press conference at its office at Hotel Yaisana in Gandhi Avenue here today, Ranjit, President of TDC, recalled that Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh had earlier assured Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union (AMRTDMWU), TDC and the bereaved family members that necessary actions would be initiated against SDPO Manjit for his unruly conduct.
But till today, the State Government has not taken up any action.
So, TDC has been compelled to stop plying of all commercial vehicles from February 20 to 22 in protest.
During the agitation, none of the FCI truck drivers would be allowed to load or unload goods and all the drivers of consumer service vehicles would abstain from their normal work, he informed, adding that TDC would continue to agitate until assurance given is translated into action.
Meanwhile, the owner of the truck driven by late Ningombam Gobardhon has reportedly assured to pay Rs 5 lakhs to the family of the deceased driver.
