Imphal, April 27 2009:
North Eastern Council (NEC) secretary UK Sangma and Planning Advisor PS Thangkhiew arrived at Imphal today for an inspection tour of the projects taken up in the State under NEC funding.
Soon after arriving here, the NEC officials convened held a meeting in the conference hall of Secretariat South Block and reviewed the projects funded by NEC.
The review meeting was also attended by the Additional Chief Secretary, officials of the Planning Department and other officials of relevant departments.
Out of 36 different projects taken up in the State with funding from NEC, 13 projects have been completed.
But the NEC officials were peeved with the failure of the State Government to furnish completion certificates of these projects in time.
Yet, they suggested the State Government officials to expedite progress of other projects yet to be completed and to furnish completion certificates in time so that more projects can be initiated with NEC funding.
As for the incomplete projects, the NEC Secretary conveyed his desire to complete the projects within June/July this year.
Earlier, the incomplete projects were targeted for completion by March this year.
Observing the lop-sided number of children from urban areas admitted in technical trades as compared to children from rural areas, he mooted the idea of selecting three students from each block and to enrol them in IIT Guwahati under a comprehensive plan for the whole North East region.
The review meeting studied several projects taken up by the State Government with NEC funding.
Some of the projects which figured in the agenda included Singhat-Singjol road, Churachandpur-Singhat road, TameiTanning road, infrastructure development work for the JN Institute of Medical Sciences, upgradation of Churachandpur District Hospital, Nursing School Lamphelpat, micro hydel projects taken up by MANIREDA and scholarship programmes taken up by Education Department and the initiative to add new subjects.
Development work of the Mahadev-Tolloi road being implemented by BRO under NEC funding was also reviewed during the meeting.
After the meeting, the NEC officials visited Porompat and made a direct assessment of the infrastructure development work being taken up at JN Hospital.
In the evening, they held a meeting with the Chief Minister.
NEC Secretary UK Sangma will visit Mahadev-Tolloi road and the AIFAD project site tomorrow for a direct inspection.
On April 29, the NEC team make an inspection tour of AIFAD projects implemented in Maram Khullen of Senapati district as well as Mao Potato farm and Passion Fruit Processing Plant.
They will leave Mao for Kohima at 11.30 am of the same day.
