Guwahati, April 27 2009:
The situation in North Cachar Hills is anything but peaceful with Black Widow militants carrying out frequent attacks in the hill district putting security forces and the government in a spot.
According to Sinlung News, the district has the highest deployment of security forces, which included 55 companies of Central paramilitary forces and army personnel besides Assam Police.
However, no amount of counter-insurgency operations seems to be working at the moment.
Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi yesterday admitted, "The situation is bad there and it's a matter of great concern for the government".
The Dima Halam Daogah's Jewel Garlossa faction has been sending feelers to the government to initiate peace talks and has even declared a unilateral ceasefire.
But there's no response from the government so far.
Sources said militants belonging to the DHD (J), known as Black Widow militants, have stepped up their subversive activities from April 8 when they ambushed a convoy of Election Commission observer AC Singh in the NC Hills.
However, no one was injured in the attack.
