Women polo lined up for Statehood Day

Imphal, January 12 2016:
In commemoration of the Statehood Day
(January 21), a women polo
tournament would be held at
Imphal Pologround here
starting from January 17.
Speaking to media persons
at the conference hall of Old
Secretariat today, Chief Sec-
retary O Nabakishore inform-
ed that the first Statehood
Polo Tournament would be
held under the aegis of the
All Manipur Polo Associa-
tion.
While informing that a
Manipuri women polo team
would play a match in Rajas-
than, the Chief Secretary
expressed deep concern over
diminishing population of
Manipuri pony and the ever
shrinking grazing grounds.
Tourism Secretary Nidhi
Mani Triparthy said that the
women's polo tournament
would be participated by a
team from the USA among
others.
He exuded that polo can
contribute significantly in
promoting tourism industry in
the State.
Polo is closely associated
with the history and culture
of Manipur and holding a
women's polo tournament
would go a long way in high-
lighting the immense roles
shouldered by Manipuri wo-
men within their families and
the society at large.
A Manipuri women polo
team would play a match in
Rajasthan as a part of a cul-
tural exchange programme, he
continued.
All Manipur Polo Asso-
ciation president Dr K
Saratchandra said that the
tournament would be partici-
pated by Chingkheihunba Polo Club, Thoubal Polo Club, Eastern Students'
Club, Venture 15 Polo Club and a team from the USA.
The tournament would continue till January 21, he added.
Government of Manipur's consultant RK Nimai was also
present at the press meet.
