Imphal, September 07 2012:
The BRO has reportedly lodged a complaint with the State Government saying that continuous movement of heavy vehicles along with security escorts has been hampering development/repairing work of NH 37 (Imphal-Jiribam) highway.
According to a letter received by the Chief Secretary from the Chief Engineer of BRO's Project Pushpak (Manipur), the repairing/development work of the highway is being seriously impeded due to movement of large number of commercial vehicles, insecure law and order situation and short working season, as observed by the monitoring committee during their inspection tour on the highway from January 19 to 22 this year.
Even after blockades imposed along NH 2 were lifted, large number of vehicles carrying essential commodities were plying on Imphal-Jiribam highway.

As per an observation of the monitoring committee, as many as 600 vehicles travelled together in a single convoy on NH 37 .
There were movements of such convoys four or five times in a week and this information was available with the BRO, said the letter.
Another point is, local labourers do not work on Sundays thereby reducing the number of working days.
To address the problem of short working season and also to enable BRO to complete the highway development within the stipulated period, the BRO wrote to the State Government to issue specific directives to all concerned and stop movement of convoys on NH 37 .
It also suggested to resume movement of convoys with security escorts on NH 2 as was done before August last year.
