A letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Govemment of lndia addressed to DGP so fall States stated that there are around 28 instances where suspected modified powerbanks were detected and recovered at various airports by the Central Security agencies out of which some were found to be genuine.
In such type of cases, the modified power banks are seized, and disposed of by the security agencies and passengers are allowed to go without registration of cases.
Quoting the letter, PRO of the State Police Department said these modified power banks are locally made with normal battery, a circuit and a putty (a clay used to fix glasses on iron made windows) to fill the cavity and to make it heavy, it gives at scanning image of an IED during screening and the electronic circuit present further creates panic for the Screener.
The letter further elaborated that although the clay like item inside the power bank is not an explosive, there are possibilities that anti-national elements/terrorists can use it to further their malafide intentions at the airports.
As such, the PRO said it conveyed the message so as to spread the information and awareness among the general public.
