Imphal, July 01 2019:
Demanding a hike in their wages, the All Manipur Motiya Workers' Union (AMMWU) has launched a cease work strike from today.
The union has been demanding labour charge of Rs 3000 for loading and unloading of goods from trucks with 12 axles, Rs 2700 for trucks with 10 axles, Rs 2400 for trucks with six axles and Rs 1000 for local trucks.
Speaking at a meeting of the union held today at Irabot Bhavan, its president L Sotinkumar said that there are around 3000 transport workers at Imphal city and they are affiliated to the union since 30 years back.
They have been working in transport, gala mal, hardware and garment sectors.
As per rules, their wages should be revised and hiked by 40 per cent every two years.
But till date, their wages have been hiked by only 25 per cent.
In spite of serving several ultimatums to business persons/firms concerned, there is not a single instance of hiking their wages by 40 percent.
As for the labourers working in transport sector, their wages have not been reviewed since 2016, Sotinkumar said.
He said that the cease work strike launched today would continue until the demands of AMMWU are fulfilled.
