State celebrates National Sports Day

Chief minister N Biren and youth affairs & sports minister Letpao Ha-okip have extended greeting to sportspersons, coaches and every sports loving person on the occasion of National Sports Day.
In his message, Biren highlighted that every year National Sports Day is observed on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Indian hockey legend major Dhyan Chand.
"Performance in competition and sports are today benchmarks for a country's development and welfare.
In this regard, Manipur is recognised as the 'Powerhouse of Indian Sports'.
Gradually, over the years, sportspersons from the state have been excelling in the international arena as well.
Recent performances at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 are no exception.
The state government has been continuously supporting and encouraging our sporting talents in the best way we can and we will continue to do," he said.
In his message, Letpao Haokip said, "Our Manipur, even though a tiny state has been known for its excellence in sporting talents and has often been called as the powerhouse of Indian sports.
The huge success of Manipuri players at the recent Tokyo Olympics 2020 is a good testimony for that.
The state government has been always to develop sports in Manipur".
Meanwhile, National Sports Day celebrated by many organisations including 44 Assam Rifles and Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) Thoubal with the events marked by organising sports competitions and distribution of sport items.
44 Assam Rifles of 22 Sector/IGAR (East) organised one day sports meet at Tamenglong.
On the other hand, NYK Thoubal in collaboration with Youth Volunteers Association (YVA) Pallel celebrated National Sports Day (Rashtriya Khel Diwas) with distribution of sports equipment to volunteers of YVA by NYK Thoubal district youth officer Michael T Mate.
A friendly football match was also organised at Pallel to encourage children to participate in physical activities as per the theme of National Sports Day.
Assam Rifles Battalions of Churachandpur Sector organised volleyball and football matches in villages of Churachandpur and Noney districts to commemorate National Sports Day.
PRO IGAR (S) informed in a release that various local volleyball and football clubs participated in the sports events organised to mark the birth anniversary of 'Hockey Wizard' Major Dhyan Chand.
