DESAM bats for upgrading RIMS

The Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has urged Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare to upgrade Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) to the status of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) .
In a memorandum submitted to the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan, president of DESAM Moirangthem Angamba pointed out that RIMS is already a regional institute catering to undergraduate and post graduate medical students from seven NE States.
RIMS also provides medical services to patients from neighbouring States and patients from neighbouring country, Myanmar.
The medical institute is already an autonomous Central institute since April 1, 2007 and the location of the institute, Imphal is well connected by air.
It already has 300 acres of space against the prescribed norm of 200 acres for establishment of AIIMS like institutes, the DESAM memo mentioned.
It is also equipped with basic infrastructure for all specialities and super-specialities with qualified manpower.
Apart from MBBS, the institute has also opened MD/MS course in 26 subjects, MCH in Urology and Plastic Surgery, BDS, BSc (Nursing), M Phil in Clinical Psychology, Bachelor course in Speech and Hearing and Ph D.Besides Bachelor course in Prosthetics and Orthotics, and bachelor course in Physiotherapy are slated to start from 2015 .
Pointing out that Manipur is a gateway to South East Asia and in tandem with the LEP of Govt of India, the DESAM representation said that RIMS, if upgraded, could become a medical tourism hub of the entire region.
