Imphal, June 10 2013:
The food items of the brand name Postik Aahar and Postik Khichdi which are supplied to Anganwadi Centres under Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) could no longer be palatable to children.
There are also complaints of the food items being sub-standard in quality thereby compromising the health and nutrition of young children.
Some Anganwadi helpers and workers told Hueiyen Lanpao that the food items supplied under ICDS are being manufactured at Guwahati, but the children there have stopped consuming the food.
New food items rich in nutrients have now replaced Postik Aahar and Postik Khichdi in Anganwadi Centres across Assam.
However, they said that children in Anganwadi Centres across the State are still fed with those sub-standard food items.
The ICDS food items are no longer palatable to children and so many of them have stopped consuming the food in Anganwadi Centres.
The workers and helpers have approached the officials of Social Welfare Department to change the food items supplied to Anganwadi Centres, but there has been no response from the officials concerned in this regard till date.
They have also submitted a memorandum to the Governor and Chief Minister regarding the issue.
Moreover, the workers and helpers have also drawn the attention of the authorities concerned towards construction of proper Anganwadi Centres and supply of necessary items such as mats and activity kits for children.
