Imphal, August 28 2013:
People for Animal (PFA), Thoubal has expressed its gratitude to Chief Wildlife Warden, Manipur for his action being taken up to rescue wild animals listed in schedule of WLPA which are held captive at unauthorized/unrecognized zoos of the state.
In a statement, its Managing Trustee said PFA Thoubal has been informed that many Schools, Hospitals, Hotels, Gardens and some VIP residences of the state are having small zoos.
"We have also got some names of such places.
It is sad that the animals were being kept in small enclosures and treated cruelly.
Any enclosure holding wild animal whether it may be for academic purposes or recreation is term as zoo under WLPA.
Zoos operated without authorization of Central Zoo Authority of India (CZA) are illegal and punishable under WLPA", the statement pointed out.
PFA Thoubal has also appealed to all the concerned Divisional Forest Officers and Forest Range Officers (ROs) who are collecting information, to honestly report all such zoos to the CWW so that such illegal and cruel activities be ended.
