Delhi Police initiate verification of Manipuri students

New Delhi, February 10, 2010:
A man, suspected to be handling finances of Manipur-based extremist outfit People's United Liberation Front (PULF) and wanted in Manipur in four cases, was arrested here today, police sources said.
Sheikh Sadik Hussain @ Nazir (40) was caught by Delhi Police's Special Cell from Hauz Rani following a tip-off, they said.
Hussain, a graduate from Manipur University, is said to be the finance secertary of the extremist outfit.
He was staying in the capital for the past two years along with his wife, children and two sisters.
One of his sisters is a nurse in a city hospital while the other teaches in an engineering college in Faridabad.
Hussain claimed that he was running a business here.
He also claimed that he got a contract from Manipur with regard to some educational activities and was involved in it, sources said.
Police are verifying his claims.
Imphal: In the meantime, reports received here said that Delhi Police have started taking steps to search and arrest cadres of various insurgent groups in the capital city there.
The steps are being taken following reliable information that hardcore cadres of various insurgent groups of Manipur were taking shelter in Delhi.
Police are verifying the identity and whereabouts of the students from North Eastern states including Manipur studying in Delhi.
A directory of all the students from the North East had already been prepared, the report said.
As part of the exercise of the Delhi Police, they have sought help from Manipur Police to verify the students of Manipur.
A letter had been despatched by Delhi Police to Manipur Police.
Delhi Police reportedly sent photographs, names, addresses, etc.
of the students staying in Delhi to Manipur Police asking for verification.
Meanwhile, district SPs had reportedly directed the Police Stations in the respective areas to send officers to the homes of the students directly to verify.
It is believed that not only the students studying in Delhi, but also others either working or doing business may also come under the police net for verification.
