Murder weapon recovered, accused arrested

Haobijam Jogeshchandra, SP Imphal West, has stated that police have arrested the accused who shot dead his uncle Khullem Tomba at Langol Punshi Leikai yesterday apart from recovering two small arms (including a 9 mm pistol) used in the crime.
Briefing media persons at his office chamber and in the presence of DIG K Jayentakumar, Haobijam Jogeshchandra said that Imphal West district police control room received a telephonic information at around 2.40 pm yesterday stating that an individual aged around 52 years had been shot to death by an unknown individual at Meitei Langol Punshi Leikai and thereafter the assailant had fled from the scene.
Soon after police received the information, a large number of district police and commando personnel rushed to the spot and conducted search operation in the surrounding areas and at different junctions to arrest the unknown assailant.
A case was also registered at Lamphel PS.
The SP informed that during the course of investigation, the deceased was identified as Khullem Tomba (52) s/o (L) Kh Jugeshwor Singh of Langol Punshi Leikai and after collecting necessary information, the assailant was also identified as Khullem Jiten Singh (41) s/o Kh Kendrajit of Naoremthong Khullem Leikai (presently staying at Top Khongriangkhong).
The police hunted down the accused with care as it was reported that he possessed two small arms (including the license gun of the deceased victim).
Upon learning that the murder accused was loitering around Porompat area, a team of Imphal West commando led by Inspector P Achouba (OC Imphal West) rushed to the spot and arrested Khullem Jiten from JNIMS casualty ward.
The SP continued that Jiten admitted that he had committed the crime and based on his disclosure, the weapons he used to commit the crime was recovered from a vehicle workshop owned by one Ibungo at Porompat Thawan Thaba Leikai.
One 0.32 Llama with two live bullet rounds one 9 mm Steyr M9 pistol with 12 live bullet rounds were seized by the police, the SP said.
On the other hand, DIG K Jayentakumar said that during initial investigation it was learned that the accused was currently under trial for a murder case of one of his own uncles in the year 2015 and was presently on bail.
The DIG also said that the bullet injuries found on the left hand and left buttock of the accused is highly suspected to be self-inflicted and the police working to uncover the real motive behind the crime.
He further clarified that no arms license had been issued to the accused from the authority concerned after he had committed a similar crime in 2015 and his earlier arms license was revoked.
The 9 mm Steyr M9 pistol is a smuggled weapon as such guns are not issued to the State Police Department.
On the other hand, the licensed gun which is stated to be that of the deceased victim has been verified by the police team, the DIG added.
On the other hand, the accused Jiten was produced before the Duty Magistrate Imphal West today and remanded to 10 days in police custody.
