10 artisans honoured with State Awards

Commerce and Industries Department, Government of Manipur has presented State Awards to 10 exceptional artisans, Merit Awards to 12 artisans and Inspirational Awards to 30 other artisans working for the promotion and development of handloom and handicraft industries in the State.
The awards and incentives were presented during a function held at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen here today.
The State Award carries a cash prize of Rs.20000 while Merit Award and Appreciation Award carry Rs.8000 and 5000 respectively.
The artisans who have been honoured with the State Awards are Thokchom Pratika of Kakching, Elang Newme of Tamenglong, Irengbam Bilasini Devi of Sagolband, Ningombam Bishorjit of Serou, A Kamala of Wangkhei, L Tilotama of Khongman.
Arunapyari Salam of Masjid Road, Babita Devi of Kwakeithel and L Jayenta.

Speaking on the occasion, Principal Secretary of Commerce and Industries O Nabakishore said that Manipur has got an industrial policy that would also help in the development and promotion of handloom and handicraft industries in the State.
New schemes would also be implemented to benefit the skilled craftsmen in the State, he assured.
He further said that handloom and handicrafts have been flourishing in the State since ancient days of Kings and Queens.
This industry should be developed and promoted to the international level in anticipation of large number of foreign tourists who would be coming to the State after the upgradation of Imphal Airport to an international airport shortly, Nabakishore added.
The demand for handloom and handicraft products would also go up with the entry of large number of foreign tourists.
The craftsmen of the State would benefit a lot in the days to come, Principal Secretary contended.
MLA Elangbam Chand, who was also present, emphasized on the development of handloom and handicraft industries to improve socio-economic condition of the State.
Director of Art and Culture Dr K Sobita and Director of Commerce and Industries B John Tiantinkhuma were also present at the award ceremony.
