A public function was organised by 4/8 Gorkha Rifles at Ningthoukhong to commemorate the 61st Republic Day celebration on January 26 .
A statement issued by the Gorkha Rifles said the function began with a Peace March from Ningthoukhong market along the NH 150 and culminated at Ward No 13 of Ningthoukhong.
People from various strata of society including school children, youth, Meira Paibis and elders of society voluntarily participated in the function which is a sign of normalcy returning to the region, it conveyed adding that hearty participation of the people further testify that the people of Manipur want peace.
This march was followed by a public function which began with a Flag Hoisting Ceremony wherein the National Flag was hoisted by the Commanding Officer along with elders and children of Ningthoukhong followed by the National Anthem.
enthralling performance by a local troupe showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Manipuri people and a bouquet of patriotic songs presented by the Jazz and Pipe bands of the 4/8 Gorkha Rifles were the other highlight of the celebration function.
The Commanding Officer of 4/5 Gorkha Rifles Col CK Seshadri, who gave away study material to 10 poor and needy children, during his brief speech urged the august gathering to contribute towards our common goal of bringing peace and prosperity in Manipur.
He emphasized upon the fact that achievement of these goals were entirely dependent on whole hearted contributions from people of all walks of life in constructive partnership with the security forces.
It was very heartening to note that the local population from different strata of society appreciated the plethora of measures adopted by the unit to provide a secure environment to the people of this area to continue their vocations freely without the fear of extortions and pressures from the UG elements, the statement added.
