Lawmkunga urges to stop Jhum cultivation

A two day training programme on Community based Forest Management organised by the Tribal Research Institute (TRI) commenced today at the auditorium of the institute situated at Chingmeirong, Imphal.
Additional Chief Secretary, Manipur, PC Lawmkunga IAS graced the inaugural function as chief guest.
Joint Director, TRI, Z Solomon presided over the function.
Under Secretary, TD and TRI, Lalthanglun Guite and IFS Soreiphi Vashum also attended the function as guest of honour and resource person respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, PC Lawmkunga said that most tribals in the state utilize forest products for their survival.
However the state is facing serious environmental threats due to deforestation practices being done by the people.
It is directly affecting the extinction of various of forest products and wildlife habitat.
It has also resulted in degradation of soil and its fertility.
He said the most important and prime cause of the mass deforestation in the state is the Jhumming system being adopted by the hill people.
Calling for a safe future for the future generation of the state, he urged the hill people to stop the Jhumming system and save the environment from further degradation.
Lalthanglun Guite said that around 90 % of the total land area of the state are in the hill regions.
The fact automatically directs the responsibility to stop deforestation and save the endangered environment of the state to the hill people.
It is high time for a mass understanding to stop degrading the hill environment.
Z Solomon also urged to prevent further deforestation in the hill areas of the state to save the endangered environment.
Soreiphi Vashum who was the resource person of the session today gave a lecture on 'Community based Forest Management � Law and Acts' .
