Imphal, November 09 2014:
Days after a public convention unanimously resolved to enforce Inner Line Permit System in the State from November 19 if the government fails to implement the system within November 18, six colleges based in Imphal West have pledged to extend full support to Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) Students' Wing which is leading the demand for enforcement of the system in the State.
The six colleges are GP Women's College; DM College (Arts, Science & Commerce); Manipur College; Oriental College; Mayai Lambi College and Imphal College.
Announcing the call during a press meet here at GP Women's College, Yambem Ranjan, general secretary of DM College of Science Student's Union asserted that it is the foremost task of the government to implement ILPS at the earliest possible to monitor the unchecked influx of outsiders into the State which has posed a serious threat to existence of the indigenous people.
Lamenting that the number of outsiders entering the State has reached to an alarming figure, he pointed out that governance and economy of the State including business establishments would witness a drastic change once the number of outsiders surpassed the population of the indigenous people.
Moreover, the rate of crime and violence would also increase due to the change in the population of non-locals and indigenous.
As such, implementation of ILPS is the only means to curb all the potential threats in future, he maintained.
Slamming the government for not doing enough to implement the system despite its urgent need, he demanded stringent action against Additional SP (Traffic) who raided office of JCILPS at Nongmeibung beyond her jurisdiction and took away several of its members forcibly.
Rounds of talks were held between the government and JCILPS on ILPS issue but the government is not showing enough political will to implement the system.
The inaction of the government has led the JCILPS to resolve to enforce the system from November 19, he added.
Cautioning that the government should take the November 18 dateline set by the committee seriously, he pledged that students of the six colleges would endorse all kind of steps taken up by JCILPS to implement the ILPS here in the State at the earliest possible.
Meanwhile, under the aegis of JCILPS, Lalambung Makhong Development Committee; Lalambung Makhong Youth Volunteer Association; Ereipak Chaokhatnaba Hotnaba Ereipakchasingi Lup and women folks of Nagamapal Soram Leikai conducted a survey at Lalambung Makhong Community Hall, Imphal West to verify non-locals staying in the area.
During the survey, details of identification, profession and other relevant information of non-locals were recorded.
Similar verification drive was also conducted by Uripok Gopaljee Leirak Youths' Association and Khurai Ahongei Eastern Educational Club at their respective areas.
