Although the transmission rate of HIV AIDS is decreasing globally, Manipur has been maintaining its record with around 3000 new HIV cases every year, said Dr.Birachandra, District AIDS Officer, Imphal East, today in a one day HIV/AIDS convention held at Moirangpurel Communty Hall, Imphal East.
The one day HIV/AIDS convention was jointly organized by the Moirangpurel Youth Club and Itham Quarry Workers' Welfare Union, Itham, under the aegis of Manipur Legislature Forum on HIV/AIDS.
Speaking on the occasion as resource person, Dr.Birachandra said that International Conventions on HIV/AIDS have become incomplete without discussing the facts of Manipur.
The total figure of people living with HIV/AIDS in Imphal East alone has reached 2650 in record time.
One out of every second pregnant mother is found to be infected with the virus.
In a speech, MLA Th.Shyamkumar stressed the need of sincerity and truthfulness between a man and woman before getting married.
He said that the virus is a dreaded virus which can wipe out the future generation of a society.
Every person of the state should voluntarily test their blood samples for the virus.
Speaking on the occasion, Sushil Huidrom, State Coordinator, UN AIDS, said that the present figure of HIV /AIDS affected people of the state is very critical.
If it is not intervened in time, the future generations of the state will be wiped out.
He also said that MLFA is a body who wants to cooperate with MACS and other NGOs and not to compete with them.
President, Andro Kendra Development Organisation, Md.Fakrudin and Advisor of the organization, Salamat Sheikh also attended the convention as presidium members.
